iMAG Shop SafetySafety Guy

All iMAG students must pass with a 100% a General Safety Test to work on projects in the shops. Use the following safety guidelines and the iMAG safety Quizlet to study for the test.

Students who demonstrate that they are unable or unwilling to follow safety guidelines will be denied shop privileges and will receive discipline consequences (see your iMAG Personnel file page).

Everyone working in the iMAG shops need to help prevent accidents and to work safely. These are some things you need to know to stay safe and to pass the iMAG safety exam.

 

Basic Safety Terms:


Safety is the state or condition of being safe from danger, risk, or injury.

Accident is any sudden, unintentional event which causes personal injury or damage.

First Aid any immediate temporary care given an accident victim until a health care professional arrives

Ergonomics- the study of workplace equipment design or how to arrange and design devices, machines, or workspace so that people and things interact safely and most efficiently

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)-the main federal agency charged with the enforcement of safety and health legislation

Hazard- any situation or condition that has the potential to cause damage or injury

5 types of shop hazards-mechanical, chemical, light, electrical, ergonomic

Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)- An information sheet that provides information on the safe use, hazards, & emergency steps to take when using chemicals

Personal Protective Devices- clothing or equipment, such as goggles, dust masks, and gloves worn for protection from potential bodily injury associated with chemical use or machine operation


General Safety Guidelines

Keep aisles, doorways and work areas clean of trash.

Return tools to their proper place after use. Keep your work area clean.

Do not operate any power tool or equipment without the proper instruction and instructor approval.

Use tools and equipment for their intended purpose.

Do not touch or operate any equipment without the instructor's permission.

Do not lean on light tables or other glass surfaces.

Only one person should operate a machine at a time.

Take appropriate steps to prevent accidents by tying back long hair, rolling up sleeves, and removing loose jewelry and earrings.

When lifting heavy objects, always bend from the knees and if needed get help from a partner.

If an accident occurs, no matter how small, immediately inform an instructor.

Avoid distractions and absolutely avoid distracting others... accidents can take only a second to occur.

No horseplay in the shop.

Always use special care when handling chemicals.

Keep supplies properly stored.

Dispose of and store combustible materials in safe containers.

Carry knives and other sharp objects safely and with the point down.

Make sure you know how to disconnect any power tools and equipment you use.

Always report unsafe behavior to the instructor.

Keeps hands clean and out of your mouth.

Do not look directly into or touch strong lights.

 

Laser Engraving Shop Safety

Do not operate any engraving shop equipment without the proper instruction and instructor approval.

Always have the proper exhaust system on when operating the engraver and remain on for a few minutes after a job is completed.

Make sure that the lid is secure when feeding or emptying the engraver.

Never walk away from a running engraving job.

Always turn off equipment at the end of a shift.

 

Print Shop Safety

Do not operate any print shop equipment without the proper instruction and instructor approval.

Never walk away from a operating machine (Rizo digital duplicator, jogger, folder).

Turn off the motor before you attempt to load, unload, repair, clean print shop equipment.

The paper cutter is designed to be used safely by one person only. The chances of accidents increases greatly when more than one person try to operate the cutter.

Always turn off equipment at the end of a shift.

 

Screen Printing Shop Safety

Do not operate any screen shop equipment without the proper instruction and instructor approval.

Never look directly or stare at the light of the exposure unit.

Never leave the flash dryer over the platens for more time then is required to dry the shirt.

Most industrial chemicals, including inks and solvents, can be considered potential dangers and must be handle properly and safely.

Good housekeeping habits, including keeping work areas clean and organized, will help prevent accidents.

When applying spray adhesive to platens, avoid breathing the over-spray.

Always protect your eyes when operating the pressure washer.

Be aware of the safety issues associated with all materials used in the screen shop as indicated on the MSDS.

Always turn off equipment at the end of a shift.

 

Vinyl Shop

Do not operate any vinyl shop equipment without the proper instruction and instructor approval.

Maintain a clean and organized work area.

Keep hands clear of all moving parts on the vinyl cutters.

Do not sit or lean on the vinyl work table.

Do not attempt to move or carry heavy rolls of vinyl or substrate without help.

Be aware of the safety issues associated with all materials used in the vinyl shop as indicated on the MSDS.

Avoid over spray when using spray bottles.

X-Acto Knife Safety

Always store knifes safely when not in use.

Avoid bumping into your surroundings or throwing the knife for any reason.
An X-Acto knife must be in working condition to adhere to the highest of safety standards. This includes keeping the blade sharp and rust free, and never checking the sharpness by touching. Ensure the blade is secure before cutting. Be sure to keep all limbs and fingers free from the cutting path. Be sure to concentrate and avoid distractions while using the knife. Take breaks as needed to remain focused. Never carry the knife in your pocket.

General Production Shop and Equipment

Do not operate any power tool or equipment without the proper instruction and instructor approval.

Always use the proper exhaust and ventilation procedures when working in the shop including the proper use of the sanding table.

Never operate power tools alone in the shop. Always work with an instructor or buddy on hand.

Always use safety goggles when operating power equipment.

Always put safety goggle away and clean work area at the end of a work session.
